Chapter Nine

Rebecca smiled politely at Dale and looked around the restaurant. Soft music played in the background—a string quartet, for goodness sakes. They had finished their meal awhile ago, but Dale wanted to linger.

Rebecca toyed with the heavy silver fork she had used to eat her cheesecake. It hardly made a sound on the thick damask tablecloth. Centered on the ivory cloth were a crystal bowl, cut flowers and a candle floating in an amber liquid.

“I think I like the ambience here much better than the restaurant we went to last week,” Dale said, looking around, satisfied with himself.

“It is a very nice place,” Rebecca agreed. It would be petty to say otherwise. From the carved frame-and-panel oak walls to the curved ceiling with its ornate plasterwork and chandelier dripping with crystal, it bespoke subdued wealth and affluence.
